Early Childhood Music

TCU Music Prep. provides quality music education opportunities for families with children birth to seven years. Our experienced teaching staff is dedicated to helping all children reach their full musical potential.

At TCU we offer a range of classes beginning with baby classes for infants and caregivers to piano readiness and beginning keyboard classes for preschool and elementary students.

Music Together® Babies class 0-8 months

TCU Music Together Babies Class is designed for parents/caregivers and their children 8 months or younger. All children developmentally benefit from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important TCU Music Prep offers two options for babies. First, if they are 4 months or younger they may attend for free with an older sibling registered in a Mixed Ages Class. Babies 8 months and younger may take a special one-semester Babies Class designed to introduce both parent and child to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated). Our Babies Class provides a safe and encouraging environment for parents to learn about the musical development of their infant. Music and activities in the class are designed with babies in mind and families will have the opportunity to enjoy these musical activities at home. Classes meet for 30 minutes once a week for 16 weeks (fall & spring semesters) and 8 weeks in the summer. Class size is a minimum of 5 children and a maximum of 12 children.

Materials include:

  • Two compact discs of songs that will be introduced in class
  • A songbook for parents
  • An age appropriate rhythm instrument for each child

Music Together® Mixed Ages class 0-4yrs

This class is designed for parents/caregivers and their children. A child can attend from birth through age five developing musically as they experience nine different song collections with their families. By grouping children of a variety of ages together, along with their adult caregivers and teachers, each child will discover the joyful world of music in a family setting. This approach fosters natural, family-style learning where younger children enjoy watching and imitating older children and adults, and the older children learn by leading as examples for the younger children. Babies four months and younger may attend the Mixed Ages class free with their registered older sibling.

Musical activities include singing, moving and dancing, chanting, listening, observing and exploring instruments. Each child participates at his or her own developmental level. Every semester includes a new collection of music with a wide variety of musical styles that both children and parents can enjoy. Families enrolled in this class have the opportunity to share these musical activities at home. The Mixed Ages class is 30 minutes long and will meet once a week for 16 weeks (fall and spring semesters) and 8 weeks in the summer. Class size is a minimum of 5 children and a maximum of 12 children.

Materials include:

  • Two compact discs of songs that will be introduced in class
  • A songbook for parents
  • An age appropriate rhythm instrument for each child

Music Together® Big Kids 5-7yrs

Big Kids Family Music is designed for children between the ages 5-7 years. This is a 45 minute class where we prepare students for basic music literacy. The musical activities are developmentally appropriate for the 5-7 year old and are more sophisticated and goal oriented than our Mixed Ages class, yet they are still a lot of fun. With the addition of xylophones, keyboards, and djembe-style drums the challenge and structure of the Big Kids class will prepare students for future group and private music instruction. Families still play an important role in their child's music education. Parents will join the class for the closing every week (approximately 10 minutes) where we will enjoy game songs, folk dances, jam sessions, dramatic play and even structured work in rhythm and tonality. Families enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to share these activities at home. Big Kids Family Music meets once a week for 16 weeks (fall and spring semester) and 8 weeks in the summer. Class size is a minimum of 4 children and a maximum of 8.

Materials include:

  • Two compact discs of songs that will be introduced in class
  • A songbook for parents
  • HomePlay pages and Solfege Cards for home use
  • An age appropriate rhythm instrument

TCU Kids Keyboard

In this class your child will develop the skills needed to begin a successful musical journey toward piano playing and musicianship. This two year course is a transitional class from early childhood music into the study of an instrument. By learning to play familiar songs, this class makes the transition to the keyboard comfortable and fun for your child. Children will continue to learn music in a fun group environment that will focus on music reading skills and ear training skills through singing, drumming, and playing the piano. Students must have a piano or keyboard at home for practice. This class will meet for 60 minutes once a week for 16 weeks (fall & spring semesters) and 8 weeks in the summer. Class size is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 7 students.

Prerequisite: At least two semesters of Big Kids 5-7yr class
