José Antonio Cubela, raised in Miami, Florida, received an Associate in Arts with honors from Miami Dade Community College where he studied with Linda Byrd. In May 2002, at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music degree under the instruction of Dr. Gary Wolf. In addition, in May of 2004 Mr. Cubela graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University where he studied with John Owings and Maestro Harold Martina. He also works at St Matthew’s Catholic Church in Arlington as their organist, pianist and choral director in residence
Mr. Cubela has also received many honors and awards, which include: First Place in the University of Central Florida Piano Concerto Competition, performer at the TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute (now known as Piano Texas Institute), placement in the Gray Perry Young Collegiate Piano Competition held in Orland, Florida, awarded membership into Pi Kappa Lambda, elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and has also had the opportunity to study in master classes with Jose Feghali, Seymore Bernstein, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Arbo Valdma, Tamas Ungar, and Christina Ortiz.
Mr. Cubela has been an adjucator for both The Sonata Club Piano Competition, and the Fort Worth Music Teacher Association’s Piano Competition. In addition to being active with various associations, Mr. Cubela is teaching through the Van Cliburn Foundation’s Musical Awakening Education Programs and is continuously performing in Fort Worth, and other cities around the state of Texas, as well as with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra in Tyler, Texas.
